This is why the Austrian manufacturer of plastics recycling plants has been relying on Profinet since the introduction of the latest control generation. Profinet switches from Helmholz play a central role in the implementation of corresponding machine networks. In a study quoted by the BVSE Plastics Recycling Association, the management consultancy McKinsey expects 80 percent more plastic waste worldwide in the current decade by 2030. So there is no question: global consumption of plastics has been growing rapidly for years - and with it the need for efficient recycling plants, especially as recycling rates are rising in many markets. Erema Engineering Recycling Maschinen und Anlagen Ges.m.b.H. has also grown up with this development: started in 1983 as a pioneer in the industry, the company headquartered in Ansfelden near Linz in Austria is today the world market leader in the development and manufacture of plastics recycling machines and system components.

From classic fish sticks to freshly caught frozen shrimp: On ten high-tech production lines and with more than 400 employees, Greenland Seafood, a subsidiary of AliSa International, produces 1.3 million fish meals per day. In view of these quantities, automation naturally plays a central role. That's why those responsible set out on the road toward Industry 4.0 several years ago. In addition to the increased collection and use of data from the production network, this process also entails increasing Ethernet networking of machines and components.
However, despite all the advantages, such an abundance of networked individual elements also means that the IP addresses in the higher-level production network will eventually run out. Joachim Gerken, who works in automation technology at the Wilhelmshaven site, makes the following calculation: "The production line for fish sticks alone has seven or eight frequency converters, plus numerous other components. If each has its own IP address, 20 to 30 addresses are lost per line. With ten lines, that would be 300." And the production network is only designed for a maximum of 255 IP addresses. However, a complete conversion or expansion of the production network would have been very costly. So it quickly became clear to Gerken: "This is not the way to go, we need another alternative."

Ultrasound effortlessly melts thermoplastics by means of high-frequency vibrations, thus ensuring a very strong bond between the joining partners in a short time. For good reason, many automotive suppliers and other plastics processors around the world rely on this process. One supplier in this field is MS Ultraschall Technologie. Around 350 special and series machines leave their production facilities every year.
Industrial Ethernet and cybersecurity
The triumph of Industrial Ethernet, specifically the change from Profibus to Profinet, naturally does not stop at this machine manufacturer. In recent years, more and more customers have requested that the machines or their communication networks be integrated into a higher-level production network. Technically, this sounds feasible at first: The machine network, i.e. the network of an automation cell with one or more machines, is to be regarded as a local area network (LAN), the production or company network as a wide area network (WAN). From the point of view of the absolutely necessary cybersecurity, however, the situation is much more complex. In order to effectively protect control systems and automation networks against external attacks, the machine network must be securely integrated into or separated from the higher-level production network.

Effective water treatment is essential for the safe operation of industrial plants. Regardless of whether sea, river, surface, well or drinking water is used. The high requirements are only met by appropriate treatment technology.
By efficiently removing particles and undesirable substances, the quality of the process water is achieved in a complex process. These special filter system installations ensure trouble-free and safe operation of machines and plants. Using state-of-the-art infrastructure and qualified experts, Machinor S.A. offers integrated solutions, customized applications, high-quality products and services.
TB20 I/O system field-proven
For the project in one of the largest water filtration plants in Greece, Machinor S.A. therefore repeatedly opted for the TB20 I/O system from Helmholz. Here, several Modbus/TCP stations were installed, which are used to control motor valves. These stations communicate directly with a local redundant visualization server.
The TB20 I/O module from Helmholz consists of a separate front connector, electronics and base module. All modules are plugged onto the DIN top-hat rail quickly and securely using a latching mechanism and can be removed quickly and easily for maintenance and/or expansion. In concrete terms, this means fast and uncomplicated installation and maintenance. All TB20 modules are supplied complete.
The ergonomic design of the decentralized TB20 system facilitates handling. Despite the space-saving, compact dimensions, all system components are industrially robust, mechanically stable and contact-proof in IP20. An optimal system width can be achieved by using modules with up to 16 digital or 8 analog channels and digital mix in/out modules.
Conclusion
High-quality technology and effective water treatment are essential for the safe operation of industrial plants. Machinor S.A. relies on the TB20 I/O system from Helmholz for this and benefits from all the advantages of this decentralized topology.
